3Vision: ‘Netflix leads among streamers for its vast catalog’

At “The D2C Streaming Wars: Disney, Netflix, Amazon and Beyond”, Jack Thomas, senior analyst at 3Vision, offered a brief insight into the current moment of SVOD platforms, their scope, and how they have been its growth in different markets.

The executive started the session mentioning the platforms that dominate the OTT market today, Netflix, Amazon, Disney +, HBO MAX, Hulu, Paramount +, Peacock, highlighting that each of these, although it operates with a very particular SVOD models, some follow exploring different business verticals, such as AVOD, or limited access to film premieres.

In the content commission field, the executive highlighted that Netflix is the dominant company, with 44 new season scripted commissions in 2020/2021 in the USA, followed by Prime Video with 9. While the SVOD field of studios highlights Disney + with 10 new season scripted commissions, followed by Hulu with 9, HBO Max with 6, Peacock with 4. ‘Netflix leads among streamers for its vast catalog’, expressed.

‘The interesting fact with Disney + is that the platform managed to capitalize on several flagship brands, which are developing several titles simultaneously, and that is the reason why it has such a high number for a platform that has just debuted in the market’, Thomas said.

On the other hand, Thomas stressed that Netflix and Amazon are the platforms that have the most foreign content in their catalog. ‘For the period 2020/2021, Netflix 44 digital original scripted TV titles in English language, compared to 54 TV titles in foreign language. While Amazon had 9 debuts of series in English, against 10 titles in foreign language, during the same period’.

Regarding the expansion of streamers in other markets, and the proportion of premieres of shows integrated with other territories, the executive highlighted that Disney, Lionsgate and WarnerMedia are the ones that are leading this trend in Europe; and in Asia, Disney and WarnerMedia also stand out, along with ViacomCBS and Sony.

‘The trend is that each company will develop a business vertical for each market or will encompass everything in a single service, such as Lionsgate with StarzPlay or Disney with Disney + and Star +’, he concluded.
