CJ ENM is #1 media conglomerate in Korea having createdthe largest sum of scripted and non-scripted shows within the market. The company not only provide shows to its affiliate channels, but also distribute them to other platforms including Free TVs and global OTTs platforms, such as Netflix and Disney+.
Diane Min, head of Format Sales, described: ‘CJ ENM operates 18 channels with various contents and genres, including tvN, the no.1 entertainment channel in Korea, and TVING, a second biggest local OTT platform in Korea after Netflix. We focuse on creating original programs, producing 30+ scripted and 40+ entertainment shows per year’.
Regarding the content trends in Korea, Min underlined: ‘Korean audiences always seek for something new. As in drama, audiences like all types of genres from rom-com, fantasy to crime. Recently launched Little Women is currently most popular in Korea. It is a story of three sisters getting entangled in a conspiracy involving the rich and powerful, and airs on tvN and Netflix’.
On entertainment, dating genres are most popular, especially TVING show EXchange: ‘Currently premiering S2, the show follows five pairs of ex-couples living under a same roof for 20 days, without revealing who their EXes. There they decide to find a new date or reunite with their ex’, added Min.
The international business expansion, alliances, coproductions is another big objective for CJ ENM: ‘All these business lines are very important for USA. We are expanding diversly from content & format sales, co-production/development to investing at media companies overseas. We hope to work more with global partners’, concluded the executive.
