The non-English markets: FAST-est growth

Omdia projected new numbers for FAST revenue around the world. Maria Run Aguete, senior director at the consultancy, recently noted that a new research showed that this segment will generate revenues of US$6.3 billion this year, with 80 percent of that figure coming from the US market.

Meanwhile, the consultancy also mentioned that the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, France, Spain and Sweden are the top 10 markets outside the United States that are projected to grow in the FAST business.

Likewise, she assured that although the United States will continue to dominate the AVOD business, in 2027 FAST channels from outside this market will have a revenue opportunity of US$1.6 billion.

‘While three of the five largest FAST markets are English-speaking, Canada, Germany and Brazil, in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, are looking to offer opportunities for non-English language content to AVOD companies’, said Run Aguete.

The truth is that at the beginning of this year, the consultancy reported that FAST revenues grew almost 20 times from 2019 to 2022 and are expected to triple by 2027. This growth will continue to be driven by the US market, which will exceed US$10 billion in revenue by 2027.

In addition, Omdia projects that the UK and Canadian FAST markets will be worth more than US$500 million and US$300 million, respectively, by 2027. Meanwhile, in Germany, FAST channels are expected to generate slightly more than US$ 200 million, while those from Brazil will reach revenues of US$ 100 million. In the rest of Latin America, Mexico will register FAST revenues of US$93 million in 2027.

Another highlight of the OMDIA report is that ad-based online video will post higher earnings by 2027 than Pay TV, video games, movies and music.

‘The $12 billion revenue from FAST channels is impressive, but when viewed in the broader context of online video, social video remains the growth story for the next five years’, the executive said. ‘FAST channels are another window to monetize content, but not the only one’.
