Anime: a content global trend resurgence

Anime, characterized by its diverse genres and animation techniques, drawn from sources such as manga, graphic novels, video games, and original concepts, maintains a compelling allure in the present day. Its popularity has surged significantly compared to just a few years ago, owing to factors such as widespread accessibility through streaming platforms, a dedicated global fan base, and a renewed appreciation among the general audience, fostered by timeless classics.

BB media analyzed this trend considering its followers, who have managed to sustain the demand for anime series and movies. Looking by region, the consultancy found that Latin America has the highest number of users who choose anime as their favorite (28%), followed by APAC (17% on average, with Japan specifically at 34%), UCAN (16% ) and EMEA (12%). In all these regions, young people between 16 and 24 years old are the ones who most frequently indicate anime as their preference. APAC stands out as the only region where women have a higher percentage of favoritism compared to men (19%).

Parrot Analytics also attests to this in its annual content demand report. For example, the classic One Pierce (distributed by Toei and Crunchyroll) is one of the most viewed titles in Latin America, partly driven by the live-action adaptation made by Netflix this year. Likewise, he highlighted that other classics such as Naruto or Pokemon continue to be in high demand. In the region, Argentina and Brazil are the countries with the highest demand for anime content.

In this context, BB Media currently monitors 3,312 unique anime titles that are available and categorized as such on almost 1,500 platforms worldwide. Of these contents, 2,298 are series and 1,014 are movies. This trend is due to the fact that the segment focuses mostly on television productions, since narratively it can be developed appropriately.

Logically, Japan has the largest offering of anime content, with 3,022 titles available in the country. Of the more than 14,000 content of Japanese origin, 23% are classified as anime titles available worldwide. With the particularity that most of this content remains exclusive to Japan, demonstrating how important this genre is for the national industry.

Curiously, the other countries that lead the ranking in terms of anime offering are all English-speaking: the United States (2,096), Canada (1,900), the United Kingdom (1,532), Australia (1,522) and New Zealand (1,414).

Another important issue is the growing offer of specialized anime services, which have become the second most common type of niche platform, surpassed only by documentary platforms. In this field, BB Media detected that although there are several platforms, none of these are of Japanese origin. Among them are: Crunchyroll, founded in the United States in 2006, available in more than 100 countries and has the largest presence in the market. Funimation, HiDive and Retrocrush are other Anime platforms in the United States, but with less coverage. There are other interesting cases, such as Anime Onegai, established in 2020, available in 6 Latin American countries and exclusive to the audience in this region; o Wakanim, founded in 2009 in France and accessible to users in France, Germany and the Nordic countries; and finally there is AnimeBox, a recent 2023 release of Spanish origin.
