BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions has announced that the animated TV show Supertato will return for a new series, and it’s currently part of the company’s lineup at MIPJunior this week. Based on Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet’s bestselling books, Supertato follows the adventures of the potato superhero and his team of fruit and vegetable friends as they battle the mischievous Evil Pea. The new season consists of 52 episodes, each 7 minutes long, promising more comedic antics and fun for its audience.
The first season of Supertato premiered on CBeebies in autumn 2022, becoming one of the most-watched shows for children aged 0-6 that year. Its popularity has led to expansions into various markets, including RTÉ in Ireland and ABC in Australia, as well as a growing presence on YouTube, where it has garnered nearly 20 million views. The franchise has also developed a range of consumer products, including plush toys and books, further cementing its place in children’s entertainment.
In addition to Supertato, BBC Studios is showcasing other notable titles at MIPJunior, including The Primrose Railway Children, a family drama based on Jacqueline Wilson’s novel, and My Friend Maisy, an animated preschool series adapted from Lucy Cousins’ books. These productions aim to captivate young audiences worldwide with diverse and engaging content.
Cecilia Persson, managing director of BBC Studios Kids & Family, emphasized the universal appeal of Supertato, noting that the show’s colorful and playful approach makes it a standout among children’s programming.
