“Song vs Dance”: the global battle that fuses song and dance

A project that promises to revolutionize TV entertainment was unveiled at MIP London 2025: “TV Asahi & Smart Dog Media presents: Song vs Dance – The next variety competition phenomenon” fuses singing and dancing in a videogame-inspired format, where leading artists face off in head-to-head battles. The idea is simple: to determine who entertains the most, without losing sight of the artistic quality and showmanship of the show.

The panel consisted of Craig Plestis and Clara Plestis, executive producers of Smart Dog Media, and Takaaki Kitano, creator and producer of TV Asahi, moderated by Mansha Daswani of World Screen. During the session, Craig recalled his time on Got Talent and noted: ‘It’s not about who is the best technically, it’s about who has entertained you the most’.

These words sum up the essence of the format, which aims to go beyond the traditional talent showdown to deliver a dynamic and fun experience, where each battle becomes an unexpected and adrenaline-filled moment.

Takaaki Kitano emphasized the importance of comedy and Japanese cultural elements. Inspired by manga, anime and card games, he explained that the show incorporates “cars” that, like in a game, choose the ideal contender for each duel. ‘I thought of a show that neither Japan nor the US could create on their own, a fusion of cultures and styles that would provide something unique’ Kitano said, emphasizing that the show is a production that combines tradition and modernity.

Clara Plestis stressed that the format is not about discovering new talent, but about pitting artists who are already social media giants, some from TikTok and Instagram, and even Olympic-level dancers against each other. ‘Quality is key; it’s about epic battles between those who dominate the stage and make the audience vibrate’ she said.

In addition, the producers highlighted the innovative use of LED technology and animations that enhance each performance, creating an immersive environment in which the show transcends the screen. The format, which mixes elements of competition, comedy and gamification, invites the viewer to be an active part of the experience, making each confrontation feel fresh and exciting.

All in all, Song vs Dance is shaping up to be a groundbreaking global phenomenon, leading the way to a new era in variety television. With a bold and collaborative approach, the creators invite the audience to decide: is it better to sing or dance? The answer, it seems, will be in every battle, in every performance and in the undeniable passion for entertainment.
