NEM 2023: a record edition boosting CEE content business

NEM Dubrovnik, the leading TV market in Central and Eastern Europe, celebrated a new and special edition, cause the event arrived at its 10th anniversary. Held from 5 to 8 June, reunited more than 1000 executives, among them, buyers, acquisition executives, producers, distributors, TV operators, creators and even delegates from Tech companies.

Highlights in Dubrovnik included screenings by Sony Pictures Television, the Eutelsat party, and master sessions by SkyShowtime, CME, and Beta Film. Following the recent entry into force of the new Croatian Electronic Media Law, the Must-Offer in Croatia panels that brought together HAKOM, A1 Croatia, Croatian Telecom, Nova TV, RTL Croatia, and the Croatian Ministry of Culture and Media to discuss the new conditions and how they will affect cable operators and free-to-air broadcasters in Croatia.

Regarding TV trends, Maria Rua Aguete, from Omdia, said on its presentation: ‘There is less consumer interest in FAST, as pay-TV continues to grow and traditional free-to-air TV is also strong. That’s why in Eastern Europe, FAST revenues will double in the next 5 years, reaching $42 million in 2028’.

Fran Spotnitz, CEO and Executive Producer of Big Light Productions, the EU independent production house, talked about the current needs in this market, regarding strategies: 'If we want to improve European television, a good first step is to have core values that we know we strive to live up to. We need more practical and concrete strategies in all territories in Europe, but especially in the smaller countries where resources are scarce'.

Meanwhile, Victoriya Boklag, CEO of the big United Group, offered a future view of company venues: 'When we talk about the future of media in general, I think it's one of the most transformative industries. We have a lot of global players, and the competition is good: they come to our markets directly to fight for eyeballs. Our big advantage is local media and local content in the region’.

'I believe that markets move along with our clients. I think local players have local covered and we have global content covered, but there is a point in the middle, which is where we are heading from a content strategy point of view in my markets: locally relevant content that can travel' commented Jamie Cooke, General Manager CEE, Baltics, Middle East, Mediterranean, Turkey, and EMEA, Pay TV and Creative Agency, Warner Bros. Discovery, who was very emphatic about the coproduction plans of the WBD unit in this region.

'MVPDs are hugely important in the CEE region, and the growth of linear TV is proof of that. There is richness and diversity in Europe, and it is a very valuable ecosystem. It is a very large market, with many possibilities and opportunities. It takes a tailored strategy to address the opportunities that exist in each of these markets. These countries are in very different places in terms of their trajectory and the future of streaming,' said Monty Sarhan, CEO of SkyShowtime.

The 10th edition of NEM Dubrovnik 2023 closed with exciting announcements about NEM Zagreb 2023 and 2024, due the organizers' think that will be difficult to ‘surpass’ the attendance of this year. 'I am very happy with the way things went. As I always say, a project like this needs three to five years in order for it to be recognized. And here we are with the tenth edition behind us, and with the response as big as ever. I don't know what we will do next year, it will be difficult to overcome this. Speakers, people who represent themselves, there are the biggest companies, the biggest streamers that exist in the world today', Sanja Božić-Ljubičić, CEO of Mediavision and founder of NEM.
