Prensario International - Annecy MIFA 2023 Daily newsletter - June 14
Annecy/MIFA 2023: a rich (and cross-regional) experience about animation

Both the Annecy Festival and its market MIFA, are very active this week, about business meetings, networking and market trends with the conferences. One unusual tip for the tradition of the event: attending people could hear Spanish-speaking visitors almost at all times at the 6 halls of the convention, due to Mexico as the guest country and bringing big names like Guillermo del Toro, who caught the main attention of the attendance yesterday.

Cécile Lacoue, director of Studies at CNC —Center National Du Cinema et L’Image et L’Image Animée— shared a research about the animation market with focus on financing and distribution trends in France and international, highlighting a natural decline in the animation production in 2022 compared to 2021. ‘During the hard pandemic, animation was a priority because it didn’t need actors like fiction to be played. After the pandemic, more options appeared. But above all, animation must solve costs and process challenges to continue improving its production’.

Multi-cultural, cross-regional? Spanish entities as Animation from Spain, Catalan Flms and ICEX, and Argentine INCAA and AAICI, have led a networking event about how to explore partnerships between Argentina/Latin America and Europe and how producers can set up new alliances, developing both content and new lines of financing. There were co-production discussions including Spain but also Italy, France and Portugal. ‘The goal has been to bring together European producers with Latin American players. There is a lot of work to do about collaboration’, ICEX executives told.

About Asia, the Taiwan Creative Content Agency, TAICCA organized “Spotlights on Taiwan”, a pitch session with Taiwanese talent where five animated projects were introduced, highlighting the creativity and potential coming from Sun-rising continent. ‘Taiwan is particularly open to all levels of collaborations and all directions about the IP market. It is an opportunity in its own’, it was said.
