Annecy 2026: ‘Ballerina’ returns to the spotlight

Good Hero launches a sequel and expands the franchise into a multiplatform universe.

French production company Good Hero has officially announced Ballerina 2, the long-awaited sequel to the animated hit Ballerina (released internationally as Leap!), marking the film’s 10th anniversary. The project signals the beginning of an ambitious expansion of the franchise across film, television and digital platforms.

Produced by Good Hero founders Laurent Zeitoun and Gregory Ouanhon, the sequel will be directed by Zeitoun, who also wrote the screenplay. Production is set to begin this month, with Gaumont returning as French and international distributor. The film is currently slated for a worldwide release in late 2029.

First released in 2016, Ballerina became one of the most successful independent animated features worldwide, grossing more than US$120 million across over 100 territories. The story of Félicie, a young orphan pursuing her dream of becoming a ballerina at the Paris Opera, continues to attract audiences on streaming platforms a decade later.

Alongside the feature sequel, Good Hero is developing an animated TV series designed to further expand the franchise. British writer Andrew Burrell, known for his work on Disenchantment and Danger Mouse, has been attached to lead the series.

According to the producers, the enduring appeal of Ballerina lies in its themes of perseverance, artistic expression and female empowerment—values they believe remain as relevant today as when the original film first captivated audiences worldwide.
