Studiocanal and the importance of IPs

Anna Marsh, CEO of Studio Canal, views that the industry is in a difficult situation because, ‘after all the effort of creating a network of production companies working really fast with very short development times, the bubble has burst and the industry is going through challenging times due to the current affairs instability in Europe’, assured the executives on the second panel during the first day on MIPTV in Cannes.  Another change in the industry that is reflected in Studiocanal is the addition to their feature film catalogue of TV production, and Marsh announced the development of a TV series called How to Stop Time produced with SunnyMarch, the production company of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s, who will also be acting.  Studiocanal is in a very good position that allows them to be in a unique position to build IP, and now they are focusing also on franchises thanks to the success of Super Mario and Paddington. Marsh also highlights the importance of respecting the values of the authenticity of the program and their audiences while developing a franchise.  Last but not least, getting into how much global streaming services have changed the industry with their full exclusive rights in perpetuity to keep audiences in the platform, pivoting to a revenue-based approach that has changed to a more traditional way of working with content. Production companies have seen the streamers’ business model as a risk, but they are definitely partners to production companies, and it is important to work together; however, these changes will open up opportunities.
