At MIPCOM 2024, Banijay Boomdog will be headlining its offering with the highly anticipated series adaptation of Like Water for Chocolate, based on the renowned novel by Laura Esquivel. The series, which will air on Max (Warner Bros. Discovery), tells the story of Tita and Pedro, two lovers who are kept apart by societal expectations and family obligations in early 20th-century Mexico.
Set during the Mexican Revolution, Like Water for Chocolate revolves around Tita’s magical connection with cooking, which becomes her form of resistance. Through her food, she is able to channel her emotions, affecting those who taste her dishes and challenging the oppressive forces that try to control her life. The series explores themes of love, tradition, and resistance, reminding viewers of the power of personal expression through creativity.
The series is directed by Julián de Tavira and Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos, with executive production led by Salma Hayek Pinault, José Tamez, Siobhan Flynn, and Curro Royo for Ventanarosa Productions, and a team from Endemol Shine North America and Endemol Shine Boomdog. This international collaboration highlights the importance of partnerships in bringing Latin American stories to global audiences. The cast includes award-winning actors such as Irene Azuela, Azul Guaita, and Ari Brickman, alongside emerging talents Ana Valeria Becerril, Andrea Chaparro, and Andrés Baida.
On October 3, the series was featured during the Iberseries & Platino Industria event, where an exclusive preview was shown, followed by a panel discussion with the creators. The series is expected to attract significant interest at MIPCOM as part of Banijay Boomdog’s continued expansion into premium scripted content.
