Caracol: co-productions and multi-window deals

Caracol TV’s international distribution unit continues to strengthen its position in the global content market with standout productions and innovative distribution models. In an interview with Prensario, Karen Juliao, Senior Director of International Marketing, shared insights into the company’s recent successes, including the sequel to Peter The Great, which has become one of the most-watched Colombian productions in recent years.

‘The partnership we forged with Disney allowed us to launch Peter The Great, Greater than Ever simultaneously on Caracol Televisión in Colombia and Disney Plus’, Juliao explained. She described the deal as a ‘very flexible’ agreement that benefited the series, highlighting that the multi-window model ‘has proven not to cannibalize audiences’.

The results were impressive on both platforms: on Caracol TV, it became the most-watched fiction in the past two years, while on Disney Plus, it garnered a significant audience across various Latin American countries. The series has also been distributed to other territories, including the U.S., where TelevisaUnivisión streamed it on VIX, and Puerto Rico, where it found a strong fan base.

Company’s international appeal is also evident in its biographical series, a genre where the company has earned recognition. Following the success of the El Rey: Vicente Fernández biopic, produced with the authorization of the Mexican icon’s family, Juliao emphasized that Caracol has built trust with audiences and the families of prominent figures. “It was a challenge for a Colombian company to handle the biography of a Mexican star, but we succeeded,” she added.

The company is currently developing a biographical series about singer Chavela Vargas, in collaboration with Miracol Media, starring actress Kate del Castillo. The series, to be filmed in Mexico and Spain, was written by Arantxa Echevarría, a Goya Award-winning director, and is based on María Cortina’s book Dos vidas necesito: Las verdades de Chavela. The story will explore Vargas’ life across three key periods: the tumultuous and surreal Mexico of the late 20th century, rustic Costa Rica in the 1920s, and the vibrant Almodóvar-inspired Madrid of the 1990s.

‘We are once again exploring new partnerships and distribution platforms for this production, aiming for it to reach an international audience’, Juliao said.

Until You Burn is the series that heads company slate at ATF

Looking ahead to 2025, Caracol TV is preparing for the return of The Queen Of Flow with its third season. The Emmy-winning series has captivated both audiences and the industry with its soundtrack and storytelling. ‘Netflix will continue to be one of our main partners for this production’, she confirmed.

At ATF, Caracol is presenting, in addition to these titles, one of its latest productions, Until You Burn. After debuting on company’s channel last month, it is already part of the international catalog.

The drama, inspired by French writer Boris Vian’s novel I Shall Spit on Your Graves, premiered as the #1 primetime series, achieving a 7.2 rating and a 37.3% share, outperforming its closest competitor, which garnered a 31.4% share and a 6 rating. More than 5 million Colombians tuned in for the launch of this major production.
