On the second day of NATPE Budapest, Clare Thompson, Non-Executive Director at K7 Media, presented the highly anticipated Keynote “Global Format Report: Identifying the Next Big Thing”, a data-driven session that explored current and future trends in the international format market.
Entertainment remains the dominant genre globally, accounting for 56% of new releases, and even more so in CEE, where it reaches 60%. Within this universe, quiz shows continue to expand, albeit at a slower pace than in 2024, with titles such as The Floor, 1% Club, and classics such as Family Feud and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. There is also a resurgence of interest in reality, with dating formats such as Married at First Sight and Love Island, and adventure shows such as The Box, a hard-hitting Norwegian competition sold to more than ten territories.
Thompson also highlighted the rise of childhood-inspired games and family party games, such as That’s My Chair, Scrabble and Sea Battle, which appeal to both young and intergenerational audiences. New mental formats such as Focus (TF1) and Yes! Yes! Media, where logic and memory are the protagonists, are gaining ground in an increasingly competitive market.
In the dating segment, proposals such as Twin Love and 30 Dates in 30 Nights shone, while psychological content also showed strength with titles such as The Neighbourhood and House of Secrets.
Formats that combine visual simplicity, gamification and social dynamics have the greatest global travel potential.
