With focus on the global format business, Phil Gurin, co-chairman of FRAPA, led again a top panel at VS Worldwide about this business segment, where he reviewed the current moment of the production and analized the prospects for the next few years with top speakers from NBCUniversal (USA) All3media (UK) and TBS (Japan) participated in the session.
Fumi Nishibashi, international business development manager TBS (Japan), offered a balance of the formats the company exports, describing US and UK markets as the two main ones in their commercial strategy: ‘I think we are experiencing one of the best moments for formats: the Asian market has stood out for being one of the most prolific producers for this segment, with special emphasis on Japan, China and South Korea; not only because of its theme, but because of its values of innovation’.
Enrique Gullen, EVP commercial strategy and international development at NBCUniversal (USA), referred to the innovation that formats live today. He highlighted: ‘Today we have very different formats: innovative and attractive, like The Masked Singer. I believe the North American market is learning ideas from Asia, as it is also one of the main markets that acquires Asian formats’.
Nick Smith, EVP formats all3media International (UK), followed about the production innovations during the pandemic. He said: ‘We were able to verify that the entertainment formats were the type of content that could carry forward forms of production sustainable. And precisely this gives them potential to be acquired. It is recognized that the USA is one of the markets that is most open to acquiring content from almost any corner of the planet’.
