FRAPA Summit at MIPTV: how to be successful in co-productions

The FRAPA Summit, held on Monday morning at this MIPTV, was a very interesting approach to the format and production businesses: there were many big format players exposing their experiences and more than 250 people attending. The Lerins hall was crowded with industry people.

Carlotta Rossi Spencer, head of format acquisitions, Banijay, UK: ‘For co-productions, it is essential to put the right people together, to get that 1 + 1 is more than 2. When you have the production group, one thing is the idea and other the energy of the team producing the development’.Jin-Woo Hwang, CEO, Something Special (South Korea): ‘The most important thing to co-develop is to have a clear objective, and to have all the people involved, aligned with that aim’.

Nick Smith, EVP formats, All3Media (UK): ‘In our company we intend to run an open model to be more adaptable to different perspectives. If you mix complementary talents, the whole is enriched. Sometimes the production side is tricky, you have to compensate young fresh elements with experienced veterans’. Phil Gurin, CEO from ThePhil GurinCo, USA: ‘One thing is co-development, and another is co-producing, co-financing, the hard sides of the projects. Sometimes you have just to survive’.

Joe Mace, commissioning editor, ITV PLC (UK): ‘Now the market is changing, in the past the European territories were closed to outside ideas. Now we have the obligation of catching up with them, especially from Asia, South Korea, to refresh our screens with new perspectives. This opening process is not easy, you have to change many minds. But it you get it, you are healthy to evolve better from that moment’.
