Fresh TV Formats at MIPCOM: Dynamics with AI and past formats ideas on trend

The Wit, the content consultancy led by Virgina Mousseler, was one of the protagonists of the morning of the first day at MIPCOM 2023. The firm offered its classic and very popular conference “Fresh Formats”, which for this edition was focused on remakes of reality shows, formats of a wide age variety, and shows that include some dynamics created by an AI.

Mousseler began the conference with a phrase from the French Youtuber Squeezie, who has more than 18.4 million subscribers on his channel: ‘What people are looking for on YouTube are formats you could see on TV ten years ago, but in a new generation version, more authentic. We’re replacing TV which is much too shy’.

Among the most recent adaptations of formats in the last 6 months, the following stand out: The Traitors (All3media), Love Island (ITV Studios), and Cash Cab (also from All3media International).

Meanwhile, among the format commission announcements in the last 6 months, she mentioned Destination X (Be Entertainment), The Flor (Talpa Studios), Password (Fremantle), Temptation Island (Banijay Rights), The Traitors (All3media International).

While the countries that imported the most formats in the last 6 months were Spain, Germany, India, Greece, Northern Belgium. And the 5 distributors that dominate the formats market are Banijay Rights, Fremantle, All3media, ITV Studios, Warner Bros International Television Production (WBITVP).

Among the series that stood out at the presentation are The Golden Bachelor, a senior spin-off of The Bachelor, where a widower is given a second chance at love. The format is from North America and is distributed by WBITVP. Also Forever Young, a dating show from Italy, distributed by BluYasmine about participants over 60s who seeks a dating. Or Beating my Minimes, where six artists are each coaching a team of five talented children and fans of them, all weaving the same outfit as they are, like mini-mes.

Then, a format that attracted attention was the Canadian one distributed by Pixcom, Becoming a Guru, where a comedian sets himself the challenge to become a guru using modern tools. Also Find me I’m Famous, a French reality show from AH! Productions, where 10 celebrities have to transform themselves and hide their identity.
