With fiction and non-fiction projects, Silvana D’Angelo, CEO of Glowstar Media (Argentina), is participating at the markets of the last months of the year, where seeks to boost its catalog of titles associated with big names in the industry.
The company has extensive expertise as a distribution agent, which in addition to supporting the project in the sale, takes care of all its stages, even if it’s in its initial stages.
‘In each market, we are presenting new original projects, both fiction and non-fiction, formats and finished productions’, expressed the executive.
D’Angelo commented that some projects have already been optioned and several have been produced in scripted format -such as Whatsapp Mamis, which is set to premiere in the first quarter of 2024, produced by Gato Grande, or La Suerte de Loli, already turned into an international success- as well as in unscripted format -like Bichero, acquired this year by Disney group, or the Stand-up Comedies they have also produced this year for Prime Video, and two new optioned projects that cannot be announced yet-.
‘In some cases, like the production of Bichero, which premiered on NatGeo, we retain the intellectual property (IP) for international distribution, and this has generated significant interest in Europe. The same applies to Animales de Peligro by Cimarrón, for example, hosted by Natalia Oreiro, which is a premiere. In terms of finished fiction productions, we have several feature films produced or in post-production ready for premiering in the region.
On the original fiction side, the company has a strong proposal with a special focus on Mexico and Colombia, two of them for co-production with Spain, as well as series and miniseries with universal themes in the genres of dramedies, dramas, comedies, and thrillers by Argentine, Colombian, Mexican, and Spanish authors. ‘We continue to invest in formats for adaptation abroad; we have just optioned the format of Gente Maravillosa in the USA, in addition to closed options in Argentina, Chile, and Brazil’.
Her vision of the industry has always been highly valued, so the executive referred to the trends she has seen currently. ‘I can tell that there has been an increase in demand for unscripted content – something that wasn’t as strong on platforms in the past and acquisitions. Within the unscripted category, there is a demand for both entertainment content (game shows and proven reality shows) and projects for series or documentary films.
D’Angelo also said that in terms of acquisitions, unscripted content and new fiction premieres are trending. ‘In some cases, the intellectual property (IP) is now retained by the owner for commercialization in different regions. In the fiction genre, melodrama is making a comeback, along with thrillers infused with a strong dose of drama in the storyline, romantic comedies, and content with a bit more eroticism (although not overly explicit). Co-production opportunities are open more than ever, either within the region or with other territories, and are also on the rise, especially Latam with Spain.
