K7 Media: UK, the leading format territory

K7’s Trang Nguyen and Patti Linnett offered on the first day of LA Virtual Screenings key data on the global format market: on one side, The Masked Singer was the format with the most adaptations last year, and on the other UK remains as the leading country with the biggest number of formats exported in 2021.

As part of the VS Next section, within LA Virtual Screenings 2022, K7 Media described the trends in the field of unscripted formats, highlighting that Korean’ The masked Singer was one of the best-selling formats in 2021, with 12 adaptations in different territories. Followed by Who Wants to Be Millionaire? with 9 adaptations; Game of Talents with 7 adaptations; Big Brother VIP with 6 adaptations and I Can See Your Voice with 6 adaptations as well.

In terms of distribution, the consultant mentioned the companies that lead the format market, highlighting Fremantle with 19.4%, followed by ITV Studios with 18.9%, then Banijay with 17.2%, and finally All3media and Sony PTV with 9 .5% and 6.1% stake, respectively.

In terms of markets, K7 highlighted the UK as one of the territories that launched the most formats in the last year, scoring 39.8%, followed by the USA with 14.1%, then the Netherlands with 12.6%, South Korea 5, 3%, Belgium with 4.1% and Japan with 4.1%.

While in the top of genres that performed best in 2021, entertainment formats lead with 53%2%, followed by factual entertainment with 26.9%, then reality with 17.25, and finally factual with less than 10%. . And in subgenres, the game shows – challenges, the talent shows, the quiz formats, the dating & relationships formats, the competition shows and the cooking shows performed very well.

The consultancy company especially highlighted that Japanese formats had adaptations that attracted attention last year: One Laughing, launched on Amazon Prime Video Japan, and that recently had a version in Mexico and that already has a version in Brazil. As well as the kitchen format Rolling Kitchen, which debuted on yTV in Japan and will have a version in Brazil soon.
