Markets that boost the global animation business

In addition to The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, executives dedicated to the animation industry have two events on their agenda that continue to grow year after year: Premios Quirino de la Animación Iberoamericana and Ventana Sur. The first is organized and sponsored by the Cabildo de Tenerife, Turismo de Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Commission along with some twenty Spanish institutions, and the second one is organized by the Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales (INCAA – Argentina) in alliance with the Marché Du Film (France). These three events, with different focuses, have built bridges so that the animation business can undertake a suitable commercial circuit.

the new director of Premios Quirino

Premios Quirino: point of reference for Ibero-American animation
With 6 editions behind it (the last one held last month), the Premios Quirino has already become a classic on the agenda of animation executives, due to its compact format, its careful invitation for producers, directors, creators, and buyers as agents and television channels from countries such as Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, USA, and also an important representation of Europe such as Spain, Portugal, UK, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, among others.

The recent edition had 148 companies from 26 countries and in addition to the awards ceremony in which the best works in the region were recognized in nine categories, the event held a new edition of the Co-Production and Business Forum, which this year grew 70% YoY in number of one-to-one meetings. Among other activities, the event hosted the launch of Ibermedia Next, the new line of incentive for digital animation projects of the Ibermedia Program, and the meeting of public television stations from Latin America and Europe that brought together players such as BBC Children’s, Canal Capital – Eureka, Canal IPE, DeAPlaneta Entertainment, HITN, KIKA, NTV, Pakapaka, RAI KIDS, RTP, RTVE, Señal Colombia, Warner Bros. Animation, YLE, were some of the companies that held a total of 1,247 business meetings.

Among the initiatives that boosted the business, the meeting of public television stations in Europe and Ibero-America stood out, as well as the workshop «Women in Ibero-American animation», which included the participation of the finalists of the Animation! Ventana Sur and MIANIMA and also the initiative and promotional brand “Isla Cartoon” that seeks to promote Tenerife as a destination for the production and development of animation products, based on a powerful tax incentive law.

•       Chocó: La tierra y los monstruos, was the debut feature of the Colombian Estefanía Piñeres Duque (Letrario) and one of the winning works in the “Annecy Awards” selection of Animation! Ventana Sur 2022

‘When the Premios Quirino was born, on the one hand, it was something that the entire industry expected, due to its necessity, and then its logical progression came with the Co-Production Forum, and it made sense as the actions were being useful for the participants. Among them, the meetings between creators and public television stations and also the fact that the television stations of America and Europe shared their experiences, basically so that allow projects participating the opportunity to move forward to have their window broadcast start or maybe to have the chance of continuing with their commercial path, or even generate new businesses’, expressed Bea Bartolomé, the new director of the Quirino.

Ventana Sur: the largest audiovisual market in LatAm and a meeting point for animation
Although Ventana Sur is a market that encompasses audiovisuals as a whole, and the businesses that stem from it, such as video games and advertising, animation has been taking a leading role in the event, through the “Animation!” initiatives and “Maquinitas”, which are already part of the industry’s annual agenda.

Ventana Sur is held every December in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and “Animation!” continues to contribute to the business of the animation sector, with more than 3,000 attendees in its past 14th edition.

On the one hand, “Animation!” is the initiative that promotes creators and projects that seek commercial opportunities on their way through festivals and that each year selects feature films and TV series for a pitch opportunity with the premise that the winners will have a special opportunity to make themselves known at Annecy Festival.

In this section, other international animation meetings also grant recognition and the opportunity for selected projects and works to be presented, such as the Pixelatl Festival Award (Mexico) or the WEIRD Animation, Video games & New Media Market Award (Spain).
