Mediawan Rights: notch international co-productions (France)

This is a strategic time for Mediawan Rights, the commercial branch of the pan-European production-distribution group Mediawan, especially because at MIPCOM the division is launching its first big international coproduction for the Spanish-speaking territories, Zorro, along with Secuoya Studios for Amazon Prime Video USA, LatAm and Spain.

Mipcom’s catalogue includes Golden Hour, a six-part thriller set in the aftermath of a terror attack in Amsterdam: it follows a Dutch detective of Afghan-origin, who one evening, he receives a disturbing text message revealing that his childhood friend Faysal has come to the Netherlands. ‘We strongly believe in this fast-paced character-driven TV series tackling a powerful subject through a human side’, the executive added.

‘We will also introduce during the market, an Italian mystery thriller drama, Stranded (8×52’), produced for Rai, and a French comedy Darknet Shores (6×26’), which will be broadcasted on Amazon in France. Our catalogue contains about 20,000 hours of programming covering up various genres. To give you an idea in a few words, we have high-end shows such as Transporter, crime mini-series as La Mante, comedies, period dramas, long-running light-crime procedurals such as Mismatch and Tandem’.

Regarding programming and content trends, Railanedescribed: ‘I notice that our clients are more and more demanding of outstanding shows no matter the genre. With multiplication of content available everywhere, through global streamers providing powerful series, through our cellphones, there is a real war for attention. So, our clients, channels such as OTT services, need to stand out with TV series that will attract the viewers thanks to their efficiency and uniqueness’.

About the future, the executive highlighted: ‘We are currently focusing our efforts to increase our presence on the Latin market as we see more and more opportunities for the content we are distributing, through AVOD players for finished content for example’.

And she concluded: ‘As a top-tier European production studios, we are always looking for exciting co-production and co-development projects coming from all around the world including Latin America where amazing shows are putting up. We want to increase synergies between production companies from Europe and Latin America as I am sure we can come together to offer TV series with great international potential that could get global’.
