MIFA 2026: a 360-degre future for animation

The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its MIFA market reunited this year a record-breaking 19,100 accredited professionals. On the festival side, the event featured the inauguration of the Cité internationale du cinéma d’animation, over 145 film screenings, and appearances by filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro, Brad Bird, and Alfonso Cuarón. Concurrently, business discussions on the MIFA market floor—which drew 7,180 attendees, including 350 buyers and 200 exhibitors from 120 countries—focused directly on structural changes in the animation industry. With traditional public funding models contracting, the market agenda prioritized alternative financing and operational models, specifically private equity integration, artificial intelligence applications, and 360-degree cross-media synergies.

‘This is a moment for fresh networking, to open minds’, MIFA Director Veronique Encrenaz explained, outlining the market’s proactive stance on the industry’s evolution. To address the capital drought, MIFA launched four targeted workshops on its opening day, including a ‘private investments’ track designed to connect creators with private financing companies to offset falling public funds.

The market also tackled technological disruption head-on with ‘MIFA AI’, laying the groundwork for a future white paper on artificial intelligence in animation in collaboration with the Creative Machines collective. Looking ahead, some professionals confirmed that both the private investment and AI initiatives are guaranteed three-year programs.

The cross-IP imperative

A major theme of 2026 was the absolute necessity of the ‘digital first’ universe and cross-media exploitation. To facilitate this, MIFA partnered closely with the Bologna Children’s Book Fair to create a dedicated Cross-IP exhibitor area, bringing book publishers, licensing companies, and IP creators directly to animation producers.

‘To work fully 360 is not only an obligation in these times with so many financing problems in traditional business, but also a unique access to fresh stories and ways of storytelling’, said Cristina Angelucci of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. ‘The end user is not passive anymore; he gets connected with brands and stories, and wants to consume in many different ways. The digital ecosystem is catapulting this trend’.

While streaming and digital ecosystems expand, the traditional theatrical model is under severe strain, particularly for independent family content. Recognizing this, MIFA included theatrical complex owners in their strategy workshops this year to brainstorm actionable solutions.

Political synergy and future outlook

The 2026 edition also marked a significant step in aligning the animation sector with European political infrastructure. The first-ever Annecy European Animation Summit brought high-level politicians directly to the industry, featuring a visit from Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and Emma Rafowicz, a European Parliament Deputy developing the Agora program for audiovisual ventures.
