Newsflare highlights metadata as a tool to unlock video archive value

Newsflare is highlighting the role of metadata in helping media companies recover the usable value of their video archives. Through its Metadata Insights service, the company addresses a challenge facing expanding libraries: footage may remain safely stored, yet become increasingly difficult to find, reuse or license when its contents are not properly indexed.

The problem extends beyond file organization. Archives can contain thousands of hours of raw video identified only by generic filenames, leaving editors with little information about what each recording contains. Finding a particular scene, contributor or spoken phrase may require manually reviewing hours of material. As libraries grow, the time and cost involved can prevent existing footage from being used effectively.

The source article illustrates that challenge with a comment from an unnamed media operations lead at the previous year’s MIPCOM, who described her archive as ‘a very expensive way to lose things slowly’. For Newsflare, metadata offers a way to retain knowledge of what footage contains and make that information available to the people who need it.

Automatic transcription converts spoken words into searchable text, allowing teams to locate specific remarks without reviewing entire recordings. Object and scene recognition adds information about visual content, including faces, logos, locations and weather conditions. A search for a rainy exterior at night, for example, can identify relevant footage within a library rather than depend on an editor remembering where it was stored.

Rights and licensing information is another part of that process. Keeping usage data with a file helps teams identify restrictions and avoid reusing material whose permissions have expired. Together, descriptive metadata and rights information can make an archive more useful for both editorial production and commercial exploitation.

The company argues that a properly tagged library can function as an inventory of reusable content rather than a collection of stored files. Footage that can be located and cleared may be repurposed for new productions, reducing the need to shoot material that already exists. Searchable archives can also support stock licensing opportunities, while poorly indexed libraries continue to generate storage costs without making their contents readily available.

A further concern is the loss of institutional knowledge. When staff members leave or retire, their familiarity with an archive may disappear with them, even though the recordings themselves remain intact. Metadata preserves that knowledge in a form that can be searched and shared across teams.

Newsflare points to automatic transcripts, visual tagging, and face and object detection as tools already available to generate metadata at scale. Its message is that inaccessible footage is often unindexed rather than lost, and that improving discoverability can help companies make better use of material they already own.
