Vanessa Shapiro’s Nicely Entertainment: A 3-Year journey of success

With a large expertise in the distribution of titles through linear channels and VOD platforms, Nicely Entertainment joins MIPCOM, showing its new slate full of originals.

In conversation with Prensario, Vanessa Shapiro, CEO, commented the exponential growth of the company. ‘We’re increasing our output of originals for a wide range of global clients and we’ve seen a sharp uptick in terms of demand for our productions’. 

Nicely’s CEO launched the company just over three years ago—at the start of 2020—and since that time she has built a library of over 80 feature films and three scripted TV series (two of which are Netflix Originals). ‘We’re producing about 20-to-25 feature films each year and have produced originals for Lifetime, Great American Family, Netflix, Pure Flix, UpTV and have brokered exclusive US premieres with Hulu, AMC+ and Hallmark

The exec also commented that they are putting a major emphasis on growing ‘title-by-title’ value by placing strong cast names into leading roles, ‘For Christmas 2023, our Hulu premiere A Christmas Frequency stars Denise Richards and our Lifetime original The Holiday Proposal Plan stars Tatyana Ali as the lead. We also have a film featuring Ashlee Simpson that will be released later this year.

In addition, the company extended some relationships and has brokered direct deals with ITV and Channel 5 in the UK, Foxtel in Australia, and M6 in France.

At MIPCOM, the company is pushing ‘cozy, uplifting and feel-good’ romance films, like A Royal in Paradise, Romance at the Vineyard, and One Perfect Match. These not only all had very successful premieres in the USA on Great American Families but they also have been licensed by companies around the world, commented Shapiro. ‘Our Christmas romance films perform extremely well in Europe—especially UKIE—and we’ve seen a major increase in Latin American and Australian deals in recent months’.  

‘We have our sights set on the international marketplace and want to continue our global growth curve. We’re actively investing in foreign language assets—specifically French and LAS dubs—and are exploring co-pro opportunities with new international partners’, added.

In addition, they’re also producing some new genre verticals—such as Nicely’s first action adventure disaster film Super Icyclone, which has already been presold in many territories including Germany, Italy, and Canada. This allows them to initiate business with new partners and expand our content offerings for the global marketplace.
