Norse Key continues its journey through the markets with a strong pan-European catalogue

The distribution company Norse Key Distribution, led by Maria Kivinen, heads into the first markets of the year with a renewed strategy. Following an initial period of growth, the company has evolved from a focus exclusively on Finnish content to a broader offering encompassing productions from across Northern Europe, including Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Speaking to Prensario, Kivinen explained that this expansion reflects the shared narrative sensibility across the region. “It is very natural to expand the catalogue from Finnish content to Norwegian or Dutch, as the editorial approach and storytelling are very similar.” The company currently collaborates with public broadcasters such as NRK (Norway), VRT (Belgium) and the Dutch Core alliance (the Netherlands).

Fiction: co-productions and Emmy nominations

Among the highlights for the current markets is Midnight Sun Affair, a co-production between Finland’s Yle and Italy’s RAI. Blending crime and drama, the series follows a death initially ruled an accident, although mounting evidence suggests otherwise.

“Northern European co-productions with other European countries, such as Italy, are in particular demand in the North American market,” she said, noting the strong interest from US and Canadian audiences in cross-border narratives of this kind. The production exists both as a four-part series and as a feature-length film, which is slated for a theatrical release.

Norse Key has also added the Norwegian series Oro Jaska (Shut Up) to its portfolio, produced by Alfred Films for NRK. The title enters the international marketplace following its nomination for an International Emmy Award.

Documentaries and new formats

The company’s factual catalogue equally reflects this diversification. Following earlier deals for titles such as Wingman (sold to SVT) and Rap and Reindeer (acquired by Deutsche Welle), the distributor now introduces Shadowland. The documentary explores the scandal surrounding director Richard Stanley in the French Pyrenees.

In children’s programming and formats, the slate includes: Tada and Kabam, a children’s series from the Dutch Core catalogue, nominated for the Prix Europa; Curiosity, a UK-originated format; and Kompany Ord, a documentary about trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth, sold to the Dutch public broadcaster NPO.

Projects in development and the festival circuit

In the coming months, Norse Key will maintain an active presence across the European circuit, including the European Film Market (EFM) at the Berlin International Film Festival. There, it will present art documentaries on figures such as Helene Schjerfbeck and Paul Gauguin, alongside investigative projects.

In terms of fiction in development, Kivinen confirmed that the company is seeking co-producers for Theater War, a Second World War-set series based on the intellectual property of Swedish-Finnish author Kjell Westö, commissioned by Yle Svenska.

“Norse Key specialises in content across all genres. We have a strong slate in both factual and fiction, covering series as well as feature films,” the executive concluded.
