ATF 2022: Opportunities arise in Asia

The second day of ATF began with a graphic presentation by Audiovisual From Spain. Tom Gennari, from BB Media, detailed that Spanish content in Asia includes presence in 459 platforms with 2,249 films and 148 series, especially in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and India. Then, each of the exhibiting companies present in the AFS pavilion, pitched their products to the audience.

In the morning, there were also Winning Indonesia; The Great Convergence and Will your IP work in Asia?, both with very good attendance. In the afternoon, the sessions were less crowded with people, but the corridors of the hall received more visitors than in the morning, which made exhibitors had hectic schedules of meetings.

There is a large Turkish presence, both with a National pavilion and 10 companies handling own booths. The global approach took the attention of the analysts, as a big differential of this ATF edition vs. previous ones. The Korean offer is also striking, with KOCCA's own pavilion, but also with a large conglomerate of small companies that brought their offer for IP, in Korea Rising IP Pavilion, where they are also offering pitchings every 30 minutes.

Advanced technology in Asia is a big issue, and several productions were seen as directly related to new technologies and new forms of consumption. Social media in particular, are becoming increasingly relevant when it comes to promoting productions, or about audience engagement.

Particularly an offer from China's GHY Culture & Media, draws attention because it has developed an exclusive series for TikTok, which is not only intended for the platform but serves as a prequel to a series that is then broadcast on a traditional service.

The interesting thing is that it attracts an audience that they had already achieved on social media and then it turns into a TV audience. Also, this new TV production is linked to another product on a digital platform. So, from a product born on Social media, a 360 offer took place for different platforms.

About formats, the Asian offer continues enriching itself. We’ve talked with Wonwoo Park, CEO & Chief Creator of DITURN, who created successes as The Singer Mask and Coupang. Park is currently working on 10 projects that, from Korea, are being created for abroad markets that need original material. In fact, the most important streaming platforms in the region are working with at least one product created by Park and his team.

Investment funds are also present at ATF, viewing the media industry very favorably. Today the need to generate important revenues does not end in the stock market, as Eric Collins, CEO & Founding Member, Impact X Capital Partners, and Dr. Thomas Kingston, Director of Coherent Media Group, explained: ‘There are large capital ventures looking for opportunities and the media industry has too much to offer. These investment opportunities are not limited to the majors. They are also looking for medium or even small-sized companies with great potential. Mainly, products that would generate great revenue in a short time are the key interest’.
