MIPLondon & London Screenings 2025: buyers decide the future

MIPLONDON 2025 finishes today its first edition, while The LONDON SCREENINGS handle a core day: WBD, Fox in the morning, Disney, All3Media at midday, Sony at the evening with a showcase + cocktail, among others (11 different screenings total). On the opposite of Cannes, MIPLONDON at its last journey provides a full day of conferences, with focus on digital in the morning, and a KIDS SUMMIT in the afternoon. Organizer RX France hasn’t set up a wrap-up conference as in Cannes, it will provide a press release on Friday afternoon, when LONDON SCREENINGS comes to an end after Fremantle.

Tomorrow, in our last daily newsletter, we will develop our own wrap up, with unique figures and references. About yesterday, we can mention that RX decided to move the main conferences from the 2nd floor Turing Theatre —200 people capacity— to ground-floor Kelvin Theatre —300— to avoid closing doors with audience outside, as it happened the previous days with both cocktails and top conferences. Anyway, Wednesday was clearly quieter in traffic compared to Monday and Tuesday, and tables at the exhibitor floors were empty some hours. A better balance between conferences and exhibitor spaces traffic, is something to work for the future.

Wednesday was also a rich day in market trends and buyer testimonials. At ‘What do streamers want?’, for instance, Hannah Blyth, head of TV at Prime Video, and Kai Finke, CCO at SkyShowtime, both UK, agreed that ‘Collaboration’ is the key word for the current streaming ecosystem. ‘Historically, we have been open to share windows with partners, as BBC. But now that production costs are higher and incomes are harder, to find collaboration twists directly make business happen’, explained Blyth (see the attached full article).

At the awaited talk between Ewan Shapiro and Pedro Pina, VP YouTube EMEA, the latter stressed that the platform will continue with its revenue-sharing monetization model. ‘We have no interest in producing original content on our own. Our success depends on other producers being successful on our platform’. And he remarked the surprising role of podcasts: ‘There are 400 million hours of podcasting watched on TVs every month. A podcast is not just two people talking, it’s basically a talk show, audiences love it’ (see the full article attached).

Buyer trendy concepts? Mike Beale, head of formats at ITV, during the screenings: ‘The newest trend we see is that our customers are requiring again brand-new formats, when the last years were focused on known successes. Especially, they are demanding adventure, survival realities, though all types of unscripted formats can apply. They ask fresh, different ideas’. Raphael Heucher, acquisitions manager, ZDF Germany: ‘We are looking for formats like ‘Loud’, the Korean survival reality, with common people. The audience these days prefer to see more protagonists like themselves’.

Manuel Villanueva, sub-director TV UNAM, Mexico: ‘MIPLONDON was better for me than expected, because I am looking for science, art, History documentaries, and I’ve found some opportunities that I haven’t in previous Cannes shows’. Alaudin Hamiti, acquisitions at Klan Kosova (Kosovo): ‘We’d like to find good dramas, series and movies. The market was good to check better providers that we usually don’t have time at Mipcom’. Manjyot Sandhu, Zee TV India/Dubai: ‘We are developing partnerships and co-production projects in different regions. MIPLONDON was fine for us, but it must continue evolving next year’.
