MIPTV 2022 outcome: the disruptive road of evolution
MIPTV 2022 has come to an end with perhaps the sweetest outcome of its last ten editions: good volume of participants, fresh energy, closing deals, new business opportunities, flexible costs, an efficient compacted infrastructure -all together in two Palais pavilions with small stands- and above all, everybody happy of having been present. It was not the Greek Panacea, of course, but it was another healthy event after the pandemic. Also, this week there were disruptive news in the global content market that made the Spring bowl more interesting.

Lucy Smith, director MIPTV & MIPCOM at RX France, said at the wrap-up conference the last midday: ‘We have resized, rescaled and transformed MIPTV, as we promised in 2019. We have asked for feedback about including the three events in one and it has been positive: more business efficient for participants. We're always looking on how we better improve the experience'. She confirmed the official figures we anticipated before the event: 5000 participants, 1200 buyers, 150 exhibitors, 80 countries. Exact figures or not, this MIPTV was as big as last Mipcom, but with more business inertia. |

Ukraine media industry joined at its MIPTV booth: 1+1 Media, Ukraine TV Channel, Film.UA and Starlight Media, all gathered and organized by MRM |

Disruptive news of the week? France: the merge of TF1 and M6 made France TV leave the OTT Salto, which will be controlled equally by the two merged media groups. The Philippines: the two media conglomerates GMA Network and ABS-CBN have come into an historical license deal: GMA-7 will buy movies from the label Star Cinema controlled by ABS-CBN, including "Alone/Together", "How to Be Yours", "Till My Heartaches End", among many others. |
The U.S. agency Gersh was present at MIPTV: Shan Ray, agent TV literary & international, and Roy Ashton, partner, both from U.S. Agency Gersh, with TVP Poland: Aleksandra Kazmieruk, head of international sales, and Mariusz Lewandowski, head of marketing |

UK: Fremantle has become a majority shareholder on "The Responder" (BBC) and "The Salisbury Poisonings"’ producer Dancing Ledge Productions. USA: WarnerMedia OneFifty and Banijay Americas have joined forces to create an incubator program designed to develop unique unscripted series. South Korea: CJ ENM Studios was launched as a new production label just for global OTTs, including diverse genres.

Everything is possible in the current content picture. And the same can be said about the content conventions. Apart from MIPTV catching up with last Mipcom -which will return to the traditional format in 2022: the weekend for MIPJunior and 4 days for the main show- we’ve heard this week that Natpe January would be in Bahamas for 2023, while the regional shows are up again, especially Natpe Budapest for late June.
TV2, Hungarian leading broadcaster: Gabor Fisher, head of programming, Andrea Zaras, head of content management, and Gergely Okros, heaf of production |
Patrick Zuchowicki Jucaud, GM, Basic Lead (Discop) added: ‘For trade shows like us we are in an unprecedent context: no money in Europe, China is over, India very complicated… you have just Middle East and Africa. The solution is to expand the reach, to join content with gaming, advertising, technology, to integrate businesses and partners with stronger recourses. The whole content business follows the same way’.

Nicolás Smirnoff and Fabricio Ferrara
The African content had good presence at MIPTV: Awoua Keit, acquisitions manager, Lima Houngbedji, sales manager, Rockia Serifou, business affairs, all from Côte Ouest Audiovisuel (Côte d'Ivoire) |
