MIPTV 2024: the last dance, but with good opportunities
Today starts the last MIPTV ever. From next year, the spring Cannes event with 61 editions will be replaced by MIPLONDON, in late February with a different format. But this MIPTV is joining about 3500 participants from 80 countries, including 1200 buyers, 135 exhibitors and 12 national pavilions (no official figures). Yesterday, MIPDOC, MIPFORMATS and MIPDRAMAS concluded with good mood. All in all, the week is rich of trendy tips and business opportunities. It is good to be here.
If you consider MIPTV 2023 figures -5600 participants from 83 countries- this year event is clearly down. But even this time, the market is showing its friendly combination of global business with elite exclusivity. You meet global top people with more time than Mipcom. This condition has been not enough to make the event perdure, but many attendees that come, enjoy and will miss this April experience.

What opportunities? If Europe and the Americas are complicated with staff and budget reductions plus the effects of U.S. writers strike, the answer is Asia. And Asia is very present at MIPTV, taking relevance in all the events and competitions, bringing many of the big buyers that attend the market. It provides out of the box formats -Japan and Korea, leaders- but also fresh fictions, as ‘To the wonder’, the first Chinese drama from top OTT iQiyi, to be selected as one of the 12 CANNESERIES finalists -the winner will be on Wednesday.
Leon Wang, exec Editor in chief, iQiyi: ‘We are very proud with the selection, it is a proof that Chinese digital platforms can generate world class content. MIPDOC wrap & trends? The genre demand is mainly pushed by digital platforms. At GLANCE conference -see article apart- it was stressed that most of the products are sold multi-window nowadays, to make business easier and with more synergies. ‘True crime’ continues on top, but also factual of sports, art, music. Strong and well-known personalities, above all.
MIPFORMATS wrap & trends? The big TV format players have more than ever, the competence of influencers and social media players, that through YOUTUBE, TWICH, etc, generate fresh, authentic formats, just for the new audiences. The answer of industry leaders is to enroll influencers or to create short versions of classics, as Banijay with ‘Big Brother’ in a 48hs basis. Other tips? Nick Smith, EVP formats, All3Media (UK): ‘Now commissioners in Europe are more willing to take risks on new, different formats as ‘The Traitors’, the reality-game format of the year, or ‘Destination X’, an adventure-reality show. They are having huge success at main broadcasters’.

Broadcasters at MIPdrama: Igor Ibeas, head of programming, South International Series Festival (Spain); Laura Aguado, marketing, Atresmedia TV (Spain); Carles Montiel, head of industry & programming, South International Series Festival (Spain); Rebeca Fernandez, sales director europe, Jose Antonio Salso, head of acquisitions and sales, both from Atresmedia TV (Spain) |

MIPDRAMA wrap & trends? If we take the 10 dramas selected, we must say that globalization in drama is here. This year there were 12 languages into the selected contents, including European, Israel, Asian and Latam Caracol and Globo series. They are many with action, violence, but especially thrillers. The winner has been ‘Icebreaker’, a suspense thriller from Helsinki Filmi (Finland) distributed by About Premium Content. Mia Ylönen, head of drama, received the award.
