RCN Studios: Biopics and musical dramas lead company’s offer for spring markets

Alex Marin, Director of RCN Distribution

RCN Studios has announced its content lineup for the upcoming European spring markets. The Colombian company is presenting four new long-running productions (80×45′ each) at MIP London, Series Mania, and Content Europe. The slate includes a musical biopic, a contemporary drama about female friendship, and two melodramas centered on romance and family dynamics.

Musical Biopic: Darío Gómez: The King of the Broken Hearts

Leading the offer is the biographical series based on the life of the renowned Colombian singer. The plot follows Darío, whose life is marked by a tragedy at age 17 involving the accidental death of his father. The narrative explores a curse that condemns him to suffering and solitude. Despite the adversity—including enemies and the loss of loved ones—Darío travels to Medellín to carve a path in the music industry, eventually creating a new musical genre.

Musical Melodrama: The Mariachi’s Daughter

Set against the backdrop of ranchera music, this series focuses on Rosario Guerrero, a singer fighting to be heard in a male-dominated environment. The story centers on her relationship with Francisco Lara, a musician who fuses mariachi with other genres. Their romance sparks a conflict with «El Coloso,» a ranchera purist. However, the central tension lies in Francisco’s secret identity: he is Emiliano Sánchez Gallardo, a fugitive wanted by Interpol and the mafia for crimes he claims he did not commit.

Contemporary Drama: Best Friends Forever

This production addresses the lives of four college friends who face personal crises upon turning 40. The character arcs include an executive whose marriage and career collapse, a single mother dealing with her daughter’s departure, a woman discovering her husband is a narcissist, and an «eternal teenager» facing a high-risk pregnancy. The series follows the group as they attempt to rebuild their lives.

Romance and Business: Crimson Red

The slate is completed by Crimson Red, a telenovela that follows Juana and Jorge, a young couple launching an innovative makeup brand. As they seek opportunities for their business, family secrets and third parties—specifically characters Valeria and Marcelo—test their relationship. The narrative tracks their separation and eventual reunion as they attempt to reconcile their personal and professional lives.
