Pay-TV broadcaster Sky is introducing its IP-based television platform, Sky Stream, to Austria, with the service becoming available to new customers since past May 14. This launch continues Sky’s strategic shift away from traditional satellite and cable infrastructure towards internet-based TV and video delivery, following similar rollouts in Germany, the UK, Ireland, and Italy.
Sky Stream operates through a compact streaming box that provides viewers with access to live television, on-demand content, and integrated apps such as Netflix and Paramount+ through a unified user interface. The device includes features like voice search, personalized playlists, and a “restart” function that allows users to begin live broadcasts from the beginning.
The service bundles Sky’s premium content with HD free-to-air channels and a selection of streaming apps and catch-up libraries. The device connects directly to a household’s internet network, eliminating the need for a DTH satellite dish or a traditional cable TV subscription.
Sky Stream initially launched in the UK in October 2022 and debuted in Germany on July 31, 2024. In the German market, the product has demonstrated success, with Sky Deutschland CEO Barny Mills recently indicating that almost 95% of new customers are choosing an IP product over conventional reception methods.
Michael Radelsberger, Managing Director of Sky Österreich, stated, ‘Sky Stream heralds a new era of television in Austria. With more customers than ever before, we are now fully committed to IP as the way of the future in order to continue to grow. Sky Austria remains a reliable, local partner that strengthens the domestic media market and keeps its customers’ wishes in mind’.
