Something Special: innovative and top- tier formats

Something Special, South Korea’s first TV format agency, is attending MIPCOM 2025 with a strong slate. The company, founded in 2019, represents top-tier independent production companies and creative talent, working across both scripted and unscripted genres.

The distributor’s catalog is headlined by Iron Squad, a reality competition series that is the most-streamed non-scripted title on platforms like Netflix. Now in its fifth year, the series showcases members of the country’s armed forces tackling challenges built around four core themes: Loyalty, Victory, Unity, and Honor. The program is specifically designed by elite military experts, demanding intense physical strength alongside mental and strategic skills, and is noted as the number one Korean primetime reality series among the 20-30-year demographic.

Something Special also brings other innovative reality formats. Still Alive is a mystery reality game show where ten contestants navigate challenges and riddles within a mysterious mansion. The key element is a set of shifting forbidden rules, one of which is the fatal “death rule,” which results in immediate elimination if broken, ensuring constant suspense, mystery, and comedy. For talent competition, Martial Arts: The Show is a high-impact competition where martial arts experts transform traditional techniques, such as Taekwondo in the original Korean version, into powerful and dramatic stage performances. The format is adaptable to feature other global martial arts traditions like Kung Fu or Capoeira.

Beyond the physical competition, the company is featuring formats with emotional and transformational narratives. Unforgettable Duet is an unscripted studio music reality series that focuses on dementia patients. The show helps patients recall past moments by gathering family mementos and a favorite song, culminating in an emotional duet performance between the patient and a family member, followed by a tribute song from popular artists. Additionally, Make Me Glow is a transformational reality show that utilizes K-plastic surgery and K-beauty expertise. The format redefines the makeover genre by guiding participants struggling with self-confidence through life-changing journeys that blend medical artistry, styling, and emotional storytelling.
