At TIFFCOM 2025, held from October 29–31 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center HAMAMATSUCHO-KAN, Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) will take the spotlight with a special seminar on its IP Adaptation Strategy, presented by Shebnem Askin, Executive Vice President of Creative Production and Head of SPIP.

The session, part of TIFFCOM’s industry program, will explore how Sony leverages local stories and intellectual properties to create content with international reach, showcasing the company’s role as a global leader in the localization and expansion of successful IPs.
Building Global Success from Local Stories
SPIP plays a pivotal role in Sony’s worldwide content strategy, producing local-language films and series in more than ten countries across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Its creative approach is based on identifying strong local IPs — from books and formats to real-life narratives — and reimagining them for international audiences while keeping local authenticity at the core.
Among its most successful productions are Padre No Hay Más Que Uno (Spain), I Hate Summer (Italy), and Price of Parenting (France), each adapted from existing IPs that resonated beyond their original markets. The company has also delivered notable cross-border projects such as Shall We Dance?, originally a Japanese hit remade in Mexico, and Yolo, a recent Chinese adaptation of a beloved Japanese property.
During the TIFFCOM seminar, Askin will outline SPIP’s approach to identifying adaptable stories, fostering partnerships with local creators, and scaling them across borders. Building on its strong track record in local-language remakes, the company is now expanding into new formats for streaming and cross-platform storytelling, reinforcing Sony’s mission to create globally relevant entertainment that preserves local authenticity.
The “IP Adaptation Strategy – Sony Pictures International Productions” seminar will take place on Thursday, October 30, from 13:00 to 14:00 at Port Hall, within the TIFFCOM 2025 venue.
