Global fiction demand is high worldwide and, among them, dramas in Spanish language are gaining momentum in Spain and in Latin America, where the production demand is growing fast due to a bigger number of developments generated during Pandemic.
Filmmakers and producers from Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Spain agreed at “Spanish & Latin American Producers: Riding the Top of the Wave” that production demand of Spanish fiction is getting stronger. With the shooting permissions opened by the end of 2020, the regional audiovisual industry started to produce on the field what has it has developed since March 2020, when the global pandemic started.
Maria Elena Wood, filmmaker and producer, commented on details of her new production Noticia de un secuestro, which was shot in Colombia during the first quarter of 2021: ‘In addition to this film, we are in the development of a new series that called Vientos Patagónicos, a co-production between María Wood Producciones Chile, ZDFE as distributor and NADCOM, Peter Nadermann‘s production company’.
Leonardo Zimbrón, CEO of Traziende Films (Netflix’s Club de Cuervos) remarked that production is heavier thes last months in Mexico, Colombia and US Hispanic. ‘This year we decided to move forward with the projects we were developing in 2020. We have just finished a romantic comedy for Amazon; and we are preparing an explosive comedy series, which follows a very spicy political satire. Also a movie that will be shooting until November’.
He also worried about the ‘high production costs’ in Latin America, due to the global pandemic, for which he assured that the alliances are of ‘vital importance0 to be able to promote and carry out a project.
With offices in Mexico, Colombia and Dominican Republic, 11:11 Films has transformed into one of the top panregional producers in The Caribbean with Pambelé and La Hermandad, among others: ‘At this moment we are developing two comedies, a short series for HBO and a long super series for NBCUniversal Telemundo. 2021 is going to be the year of the recovery of fiction production in Latin America’.
Sergio Pizzolante, director of strategic partnerships US & Latin America at Spanish Secuoya Studios, agreed with the speakers and announced some projects, including a series being shot in Canary Island, Spain, for Disney+. ‘2020 was challenging year but, fortunately, the audiovisual sector did not stop. We dedicated to developing a lineup of titles, which we began to produced since the beginning of 2021. We have a series to be produced on the Easter Island and Santiago de Chile, Chile, called La Isla, and Los 39. For next January, we’ll start filming of a co-production with Pantaya and the highlight next year will be the new series of El Zorro‘, he completed.
