Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (Japan) returns to the physical events this MIPTV, where it will promote its brand-new titles, including drama series and entertainment formats.
Heading the slate is last October launched drama Japan Sinks: People of Hope globally broadcast on Netflix. In the same month, Tokyo Mer: Mobile Emergency Room became the first Japanese drama to stream worldwide on Disney+. DCU: Deep Crime Unit, which reached its final phase last week, was co-developed by leading global producers Keshet International and Facet4 Media.
‘We offer three new drama titles each quarter, generating fresh excitement as new titles find partners and the diversity of our offerings in the global marketplace expands’, explains Mayu Sunaga, Director of International Content Development Department, Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc.
In the variety genre, last December TBS launched a romantic reality format, The Future Diary for worldwide distribution on Netflix. The show, in which performers and viewers experience a simulated love story, has rediscovered its appeal in digital and remote environments. ‘We are looking to leverage this reboot as an opportunity to expand globally. We hope you will take a look at the all-new The Future Diary’, added the executive.
The 1 vs. Many (Totally Outnumbered) is another new format with appeal that spans generations and demographics. Melody Kingdom is a game show format where the contestants’ love of music is challenged through multiple music-based in-studio games. It’s easy to customize and deploy as IP for programs that feature computer graphics and other technologies. Other formats on offer include The Double Down and Memorize This! All of these programs have a proven track record in broadcasting and are viable to produce even during the pandemic.
TBS has a long and successful track record in the format business, including with megahits SASUKE/Ninja Warrior, Takeshi’s Castle and America’s Funniest Home Videos. These formats are not simply past successes but are still being enjoyed around the world. In addition to producing and consulting on shows, TBS produces merchandise, games, theme parks, and much more.
It also launched Little Planet, a digital educational business in China last December, and is developing Tyffon, an interactive theme park featuring VR technology, on a global scale.
TBS is also involved in developing scripted formats for animated films, movies, apps, and events. ‘The dynamic and successful development of our IP is all due to the efforts of our greatly valued business partners. We look forward to working with everyone to further expand the possibilities of TBS IP at this year’s MIPTV. The whole team is excited at the opportunity to form new business relationships. Let’s succeed together’, concluded Sunaga.
