The epic and long-awaited Fresh TV sessions focused on scripted series and kids’ content on the penultimate day of MIPTV 2023 in Cannes. With a well-attended session at the Debussy Theatre, and the next as part of the Future of Kids TV Summit section of the market.
In Fresh TV Fiction, the executive director of The WIT, Virginia Mouseler, used the HBO hit The Last Of Us as an example to discuss series where the narrative focus of ‘nature’s revenge, dictatorship and rebellions’ is at the center of current narratives. ‘The more we saw fiction, the more we identified a pattern of nature’s revenge and individual rebellion, with a strong component of drama.’
Examples that supported the point included the Beta Film dramas The Swarm and Snow. In the first, a series of deadly events from the ocean threaten humanity. Mouseler also presented Arcadia, a Belgian-Dutch co-production distributed by The Wild Bunch TV. Here, survivors of a catastrophe are overwhelmed by an authoritarian regime that measures obedience to its regime by giving everyone a score out of 10 in real-time.
Meanwhile, at the Kids Summit, delegates learned about the latest trends in inspirational content at The Wit Kids Garden: What’s Fresh in the Kids & Tween Space?.
