Trends to look: from iconic IPs to real stories and game shows with twist

The Wit showcased last MIPCOM Cannes edition a new special report with the main trends in formats and scripted, where dating shows with a twist, talent battles and content to feel good, among others, stand out.

Factual is the main genre, with 52.7% of new shows launched as of August 2022, following the line with the last 12 months (52%). It follows fiction with 30.2% of which 54% were for VOD platforms, and of which 27.4% were exclusive premieres for platforms. Regarding adaptations, there were 5.4% of new scripted and non-scripted formats based on international content, barely 0.1% below the annual trend.

In addition, according to the report, 9.4% of scripted content releases correspond to book adaptations, and 4.4% to stories based on true events and biopics, two trends that remain strong but have fallen vs. the numbers presented at the end of 2021.

In entertainment formats, the classics such as talent or dating continue to be very strong globally, but always with a twist. In the first case, now adding the battles between the participants as is the case of The Voice Gerações (RTP1, Portugal), spin-off of The Voice in which families compete or The Wall Philippines (GMA Network). While in dating they are committed to social experiments, such as Are you the one? (Paramount+, Italy), Save the date (Nelonen, Finland) or Love by A.I (TBS, Japan).

Live-action dramas based on books, manga and other formats are on the rise: What Six Survivors Told (MBS, Japan)

Physical and family skills have also been converted in recent times, such as I’do anything for love (RTP1), Family Battles (France 3), Homo Universalis (Belgium), or My child, your child (NPO 1 , The Netherlands), where parents judge different forms of parenting. Coaching, cooking and education/quiz shows are also axes of growth in non-scripted.

On the side of scripted content, one of the strongest trends is undoubtedly the return to fantasy classics and strong IPs, such as The House of the Dragon (HBO Max), prequel to Game of Thrones, and The Rings of power (Amazon Prime Video), spin-off of The Lord of the Rings. Regardless of the story or the genre, something that is growing globally is also tied to talent. It is increasingly common to see more and more attractive castings, in order to stand out among the plurality of options for users.

Proven and strong IPs such as Game of Thrones come back as prequels or spin-offs: The house of the Dragon (HBO Max)

Stories that mix romance and mystery, especially from countries like Turkey (Flames of Fate, Fox) or Argentina (The Cleaning Lady), facilitate the internationalization of content. From Asia, melodramas such as What We Could Be(GMA Network, The Philippines), Serigala Bucin (GTV, Indonesia) or Kids Nowadays (Astro, Malaysia)also continue to stand out. On platforms, comic-based content is also gaining its place, such as The Sandman or Umbrella Academy, both from Netflix, Watchmen (HBO Max) or The Boys (Amazon Prime Video).
