Netflix has announced the acquisition of CBC/HBO Max comedy series Sort Of for Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
The deal with UK distributor Abacus Media Rights, an Amcomri Entertainment company, was brokered by Still Road Media and announced at ATF.
Sort Of is produced by Sienna Films, a Sphere Media company, with the participation of the Canada Media Fund. The series is created by Bilal Baig (Acha Bacha) and Fab Filippo (Save Me), who also serve as showrunners and executive producers.
The show follows Sabi Mehboob (Baig), a gender fluid millennial who straddles various identities from sexy bartender at an LGBTQ bookstore/bar, to the youngest child in a large Pakistani family, to the de facto parent of a downtown hipster family.
Pooja Nirmal Kant, co-Founder and CEO at Still Road Media, said the company was ‘delighted’ that Sort Of had been picked up for the Asian market ‘where we have already had great success selling a range of drama, entertainment and factual programming’.
Abacus was set up by Jonathan Ford, the former EVP of sales at Kew Media Distribution, following the company’s dissolution in 2020. It picked up the rights to Sort Of the same year.
Cardinal and Ransom producer Sienna Films, meanwhile, was picked up by Quebec’s Datsit Sphere after the Kew Media Group went into administration.
