Unpacking the global appeal of Latin productions

A report from the consulting firm BB Media found that nearly 7,000 productions and co-productions from Latin America are available in international catalogs outside the region. The firm coined the phenomenon as the ‘Latin story boom’, where markets such as the USA, UK, Spain, Canada and Australia lead this ranking of concentration of titles.

BB Media also observed that this trend has been booming since shortly after the start of 2020. Mexico is the market that leads as the country with the most exported productions, with 1.87% of the original titles. Argentina follows (1.08%), then Brazil, Colombia, and Chile, with just under 1%.

Regarding the number of titles that make services and platforms available outside the region, the USA logically tops this list, with 5,224 titles produced in Latin America. Of which 2,660 are only from Mexico.

In Europe, Spain and the UK they have 2427 and 2269 Latin titles in their streaming catalogs; Canada 2253, Australia 2018, and France 1731. Spain and Argentina are the countries that lead in the number of productions distributed in that market.

Meanwhile, BB Media also analyzed the genres that stand out outside of LatAm. Drama and comedy represent 33 and 13%. They are followed by documentaries (12%), thrillers (6%), and crime (5%).

While the penetration of Latin genres is different in each market. In the top 3 in the USA are comedy, drama and crime; the UK, drama, comedy and crime; and in Spain, comedy, science fiction and action.

And among the most popular titles, the social crime drama of Brazilian origin, City of God, takes first place. It is followed by Damián Szifrón‘s Argentine black comedy, Relatos Salvajes; then the Mexican film Amores Perros; and finally the award-winning 2022 film, Argentina 1985, is in fifth position for the most popular outside of LatAm.
