MIA Market 2023: A decade of audiovisual synergies in Rome

After an extraordinary 2022 edition that saw attendance grow by 20%, MIA International Audiovisual Market, organized by ANICA and APA, returned to Rome from 9th to 13th October 2023 with its ninth edition.

MIA is a destination for the global audiovisual ecosystem, conceived as a curated market, a physical and digital space for animation, documentary, drama and film professionals. Today, the event one of the most important industry event in Italy and is one of the must-attend international forum focused on audiovisual contents’ co-production, financing strategies and business models, sales and distribution, talents and projects circulation. It offers a wide range of specific programs, featuring dedicated Co-production Market and Pitching Forums, Market Screenings, Content Showcases, b2b meetings, tailored networking activities as well as an impressive line-up of conferences tackling the latest and hottest topics among industry insiders.

The market has gained throughout the years a continuous interest from the European and international professionals: top decision-makers, networks, and platforms discuss at MIA the opportunities and challenges of the audiovisual production and distribution in today’s international content paradigm.

The 2022 edition closed with excellent results: over 2400 registered participants from 60 countries around the world, with a +20% increase in attendance compared to the 2021 edition. This figure it’s a result of its strong editorial program representing the entire audiovisual ecosystem and its paradigms, was a turning point for MIA, making it a hotbed of discussion, debate, and confrontation between the most important international executives from all over the world.

More than 500 projects were submitted this year for the Co-Production Market and Pitching Forum for Animation, Doc, Drama and Film, from 80 countries worldwide (+30% of countries compared to 2022). Of these, 62 were selected (15 Animation, 18 Doc&Factual, 14 Drama, 15 Film) from 36 countries. Of all, 62 projects were selected, a unique opportunity for international co-productions.

An increase in international interest towards MIA proves the progressive growth of the relevance of the Roman market. 2022 edition welcomed over 2400 participants from 60 countries (+20% compared to 2021).

This year, “MIA’s Animation Co-Production Market & Pitching Forum” repeat a  has achieved great results, selecting 15 projects from 24 countries. The submissions received have been evaluated by the external Selection Committee composed by Cecilia Padula, VP Head Kids & Family Brands South Europe, Middle East & Africa at Paramount (Italy); David Levine, Founder & CEO, at Lightboat Media Ltd (UK); Matthieu Darras, Founder & CEO of Tatino Film (France); Mounia Aram, Founder & Distributor of MA Company (France/ Morocco); and Yago Fandiño Lousa, Head of Children’s Content at RTVE and Director of Clan TV channel (Spain).

Also, the event hosted the second edition of “Spanish Screenings on Tour”, one of the main initiatives of Spanish Screenings XXL aimed at boosting and offering new opportunities to the Spanish audiovisual industry, also through its presence in internationally relevant markets such as MIA.  The section is supported by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports through the Instituto de la Cinematografia y las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA);  the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through ICEX España Exportación and Inversiones, the Malaga Festival and the San Sebastian Festival.

This edition also received the patronage of Eurimages, the cultural support fund of the Council of Europe for the co-production, distribution, exhibition and digitisation of European cinematographic works.

Lot of room also was given to technologies and to the Innovation for Creative Industries’ program and the B2B Exchange program, aimed at fostering the circulation of professionals and works between European countries. As in previous editions, on-site activities will be enhanced and complemented by online activities, through the MIA DIGITAL online platform.

Since its first edition in 2015, MIA, has the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, of ITA-Italian Trade Agency, the Italian  Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, of the Italian Ministry of Culture, of the Lazio region. Since 2022, the market has been supported by Creative Europe MEDIA, which is also co-financing the 2023 edition.
