Globo hosted a cocktail event to celebrate its key international deals and introduce exciting developments during the final of the first day at MIPCOM 2024. Manuel Belmar, Director of Digital Products, began by highlighting Globo’s 100th anniversary and its impressive audiovisual production capacity, with over 1,100 episodes of drama and 2,100 episodes of TV shows produced annually.
During the event, Alex Medeiros, Head of Content for Drama, Documentaries & Film at Globoplay, unveiled a major co-production deal between Globo and Beta Film for the new police drama Discipline. While Globo retains exclusive rights in Brazil, Beta Film will manage international sales. Medeiros emphasized the importance of creating content that appeals both to Brazilian and global audiences, noting, ‘Koby [Gal Raday, former CCO of Beta] was an invaluable partner in shaping a powerful story that works for both Brazil and international distribution’.
The session also included updates on the international adaptation of Avenida Brasil, renamed Leyla in Turkey. Directed by Hilal Saral for NOW TV, the adaptation was produced by Ay Yapim under Globo’s artistic guidance. Angela Colla, Director of International Business and Co-Productions at Globo, proudly stated, ‘Avenida Brasil’s essence remains intact while being tailored to resonate with Turkish audiences’.
Colla also announced upcoming adaptations of Globo’s series Justicia and Intolerantes in Greece and German-speaking territories. Greek producer Primavisione will create the adaptations for Alpha TV, while Germany’s ndF will produce the series for German-speaking markets. Both shows, exploring themes of justice, equity, and family dynamics, were created by acclaimed Brazilian screenwriters Manuela Dias and Lucas Paraizo.
To conclude the event, Globo revealed its partnership with Brands & Rights 360 for the global distribution of live-action children’s content, aiming to expand the reach of shows like D.C.A. – Detectives del Condominio Azul and Gaby Estrella. Colla expressed confidence in the potential of these productions, adding, “These shows resonate with universal themes like friendship, adventure, and imagination, making them suitable for global audiences.”
