At MIPCOM 2024, The Wit, an influential consultancy in the entertainment industry, spotlighted the impressive growth and dominance of Spanish productions on global streaming platforms. Virginia Mouseler, CEO of The Wit, led the session, where she highlighted Spain’s significant contribution to both original and daily series in 2024. One of the standout mentions was Respira, a Netflix original that recently premiered and has already secured a second season.
According to The Wit, Spain currently leads in the number of original productions on streaming platforms globally and ranks first in daily series as well. Titles like Valle Salvaje, a production by RTVE and Bambú Producciones, have been picked up by Netflix, marking a trend in Spanish content crossing international borders. Additionally, Disney+ made headlines by commissioning Regreso a Las Sabinas, its first-ever daily series.
Mouseler emphasized that 80% of Spanish series have been produced in the last five years, underscoring the country’s freshness and innovation in storytelling. Spain also ranks second globally in producing series based on true events, with examples like El Marqués and the Prime Video docuseries Cómo cazar a un monstruo.
The session also highlighted the collaborative nature of Spanish television, noting that 27% of new Spanish series are co-productions, significantly higher than the global average of 7.5%. An example is Weiss & Morales, a co-production between RTVE and ZDF, filmed entirely in Gran Canaria.
The presentation also delved into other standout projects, such as the sci-fi series Santuario from Atresplayer and Superthings, an animated series aimed at children, which includes several seasons and a feature film set for a 2026 release. Spanish entertainment formats were not overlooked, with Tu cara me suena (Your Face Sounds Familiar) standing out as one of the country’s most successful exports, having been adapted in over 50 markets.
The session concluded with the mention of Salvaxe (The Uprising), a reality adventure show created by Globomedia, and Itsatsita Berriz, a musical fiction series from EITB and Pausoka, which has gained traction on Instagram and received an International Format Award.
With Spain as the «Country of Honour» at MIPCOM 2024, its growing influence and success in both fiction and entertainment formats were unmistakably showcased, further solidifying its position in the global content market.
