39th TIFF Unveils Sukiyaki, Godzilla Minus Zero and Colony as Spotlight Screenings

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced the three major spotlight screenings for its 39th edition, running from October 26 to November 4. The selection highlights a mix of historical drama, advanced visual effects, and high-octane thrillers, positioning highly anticipated Asian productions ahead of their upcoming theatrical distribution windows.

Godzilla Minus One. Directed, written, and featuring VFX by Takashi Yamazaki

Opening the festival is Sukiyaki, a musical drama directed by Zeze Takahisa. The TOHO-distributed film chronicles the real-life collaboration between composer Nakamura Hachidai, lyricist Ei Rokusuke, and singer Sakamoto Kyu, the creative trio behind the 1963 Billboard-topping track. TIFF Programming Director Ichiyama Shozo highlighted the film’s focus on the cultural impact of these artists during Japan’s post-war recovery.

The centerpiece presentation will be Godzilla Minus Zero, the direct sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. Directed, written, and featuring VFX by Takashi Yamazaki, the project sets a technical milestone as the first Japanese feature shot in the IMAX format. The narrative explores a renewed threat hitting Japan two years after the devastation of the previous film. Shozo described the production as offering a new interpretation of the franchise that “far exceeds expectations”.

Closing the event is Colony, a South Korean action-thriller directed by Yeon Sang-ho, known for his work on Train to Busan. Following its recent premiere in a Cannes Midnight Screening, the film centers on a bioterrorism outbreak within a Seoul skyscraper. It brings a new approach to the survival genre by introducing an infected population operating with a collective intelligence.

These spotlight selections reflect TIFF’s strategy to showcase diverse, high-profile Asian cinema to global industry executives, distributors, and audiences. The 39th edition will serve as a key launchpad for these titles as they move toward their domestic and international theatrical releases between late 2026 and 2027.
