Glance: inside the new VOD ecosystem

Glance offered one of the main conferences on the first day of MIPTV 2022. In the session, the consultant analyzed the penetration of VOD in the world, the genres that had the most impact in the last year, and other production trends.

The session, entitled «One TV Year in The World: Cracking TV Audiences» was presented by Frédéric Vaulpré, VP of Glance, in partnership with Tape Consultancy. The executive highlighted the VOD ecosystem, as it is one of the fastest growing trends in the content industry, and mentioned the way in which some pay TV companies bring a parallel streaming service to their offering.

Another point highlighted was that between 2019 and 2021, a large part of European countries watched twice as much TV, compared to previous years. On scripted content, crime dramas that take place within family axes, as the kings of fiction during the last year. Some of 2021 and 2022 top launches such as Kin (RTE One#1 launch in Ireland), or House of Zwide (ETV in South Africa), and The Cleaning Lady (Fox in USA), ‘were proof that genres that include plots within familiar environments, are attracting the eyes of the audience,’ said Avril Blondelot, head of Content Insight at Glance.’We’ve seen that these shows bring co-viewing back into the hours for linear content,’ she added.

Another trend of themes that Glance showed is series with fathers and how they cope with unprecedented responsibilities within the family structure. One of the titles was Le Bonheur, produced by Quebecor Content and Aetios Productions and ITV‘s upcoming The Thief, His Wifeand the Canoe from All3Media International.

Blondelot also mentioned that stories about women in roles of authority, or leading the general plots of the story, continue to be of great interest to the audience. She mentioned the French TF1 series HPI, the Italian series Lolita Lobosco, or the German series Kolleginnen, produced by ZDF, which leaded audiences in its premiere.

Another trend that ‘must be taken into account’, according to Blondelot, are the period dramas focusing on the 19th and early 20th century, which she considered to be ‘popular’. In this case, she highlighted Paramount Network‘s 1883, prequel to Yellowstone.

Regarding entertainment formats, Glance mentioned Game of Talents and I Can See Your Voice, which together with The Masked Singer, stand out in different markets as the most watched shows.

Lastly, the executives said that TV channels are betting on the relaunch of new stories based on great series, such as Friends or And Just Like That, a new season of the legendary series Sex and The City.
