NEM: Onza to adapt Máximo Huerta’s Bestseller for the big screen

The production company has acquired the rights to the novel “Mom Is Asleep.”

Onza continues to expand its commitment to film production and has announced the acquisition of the adaptation rights to Mamá está dormida (Mom Is Asleep), the latest novel by Máximo Huerta, which has become one of the year’s biggest publishing hits in Spain.

Published by Editorial Planeta in early 2026, the book has already reached its sixth printing and remained for weeks among the country’s best-selling fiction titles. Now it will make the leap to the big screen thanks to the production company, which will develop a feature film for theaters.

The novel follows the story of a 53-year-old man who discovers that much of what he thought he knew about his family may not be true. When his mother begins to show signs of cognitive decline and mentions the existence of a supposed unknown brother, the two set out on a journey in a motorhome to Vera de Bidasoa to unravel a secret hidden for decades. The story combines elements of a road movie, intimate drama, and mystery, with a sensitive look at memory and family ties.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that *Mamá está dormida* is coming to theaters,” said Huerta, who highlighted the story’s potential to connect with new audiences through the language of film.

For Onza, the project represents a new step in the consolidation of its feature film lineup, which recently began with the filming of *Entre Viñas*. According to Kuba Tarasiewicz, the company’s Director of Fiction Content, the novel brings together elements capable of captivating audiences by combining emotion, humor, and a theme of great social relevance.
