Mipcom 2022 is finishing today with better numbers than expected, according to organizer RX France. Lucy Smith said at the wrap-up press conference, that the event reached 10.896 attendees till Tuesday, so it would have surpassed 11.000 participants during Wednesday. They predicted 100 countries present, and 108 came all in all. There were 3100 buyers and 321 booths, but counting as one big spaces as the new houses of Banijay, Paramount, BBC Studios, Disney and Fremantle’s beach. Last weekend MIPJUNIOR had huge figures too: 1311 delegates. The top communities came from US, UK, France, Germany and Spain, in this order. |

The Mipcom participants hurried up their stuffs as the RX’s wrap-up. Today there are about 40% of the attendees, while 30% left Cannes since Wednesday morning. Though, the last day is important for many companies, especially for independents, to complete their agendas and not to constrict the day before. Even with less people, the closing deals energy of the event promises to continue till the end.
Smith also spoke about MIPTV 2023: it will be held 17-19 April, with a central focus on documentary and factual activities, the segment where the event has been referent for years. ‘MipDoc will be the heart of MIPTV’, she said, including a ‘Super Sunday’ pre-market stage. There will be also three other events: MipFormats, kids and MipDramas, which will be a special buyer preview of CannesSeries official selection. Last year, she added, MIPTV had in its marketplace 150 exhibitors from 50 countries and 1200 buyers.

Beyond Mipcom and MIPTV, the topic of the week was NATPE, the traditional U.S. January big event. NATPE association, due to pandemic cancellations, has entered Chapter 11 legal process this month, and though it affirms that continues with NATPE Bahamas in January and Budapest in June, industry members doubt what will happen. C21 MEDIA, organizer of Content London in November, proposed formally to acquire NATPE assets to set up Content Americas, but this, happening or not, would take time. The certainties about NATPE January 2023 will come in 3-4 weeks at the most. If not, times won’t be enough.
The big question for content industry is why, if events have proved to be essential for the market after the pandemic, so many of them are challenged. MIPCANCUN and ATF Asia, on the other hand, promise to have a good time this year: Cancun announced a record of 600 participants for November, while ATF has generated strong enthusiasm for December, taking up all the space available (RX Global said).
