Series Mania: HBO Max relaunches Script Engine in Europe

The WBD Access programme returns to the Series Mania Institute to support mid-career screenwriters.

HBO Max and WBD Access have announced the return of their international writers’ programme, the Series Mania Institute, which this year goes by the name Script Engine. Following a successful first edition, the initiative is stepping up its commitment to developing mid-career screenwriters focused on creating original series with a local identity.

The programme will focus on talent with demonstrable links to France, Spain, Italy and Germany. Three writers per region will be selected to take part in an intensive four-month programme aimed at developing an original concept for HBO Max. Those chosen will receive high-level training, personalized mentoring and regional support to strengthen their creative voice and professional standing.

Script Engine will culminate in a pitch to the platform’s regional executives, followed by six-month first-look agreements in each market.

“We are delighted to relaunch the programme under its new identity,” said Grace Moss, Vice-President of Inclusion Programmes. “The geographical expansion reflects the demand for compelling local stories and the interest in discovering new voices.”

Speaking on behalf of the host institution, Pierre Ziemniak highlighted the institute’s consolidation as a training hub for European screenwriters.

The winner of the previous edition was Julie-Anna Grignon from France. Peter Furrer, Ciron Gruffydd, Almudena Monzú, Isabella Oliveira Parise Kröger and Kaamil Shah also took part.

Applications will open on 2 April and close on 26 April.
