SPT charts new course amid changing TV landscape

In a thought-provoking keynote address at Series Mania Forum, Wayne Garvie, President of International Production at Sony Pictures Television, offered insights into the evolving scripted TV landscape in the wake of era-defining titles like The Crown and Sex Education coming to a close.

Reflecting on Sony‘s unique position as an independent player without a streaming platform, Garvie acknowledged the need for introspection and adaptation in the face of shifting market dynamics. ‘We’re in a reflective period, analyzing past successes while developing new shows to navigate the changing landscape’, he remarked.

Despite a perceived slowdown in commissioning, Garvie highlighted the unprecedented levels of TV production in history. ‘The TV production ecosystem is fragile’, he cautioned, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between streamers, linear networks, and co-productions to sustain growth.

Garvie outlined Sony‘s strategic focus on expanding its presence in Europe, particularly in Spain where the company has established offices, as well as in Latin America and Australia. This move underscores Sony’s commitment to tapping into diverse markets and fostering global storytelling.

Looking ahead, Sony Pictures Television is poised to unveil a dynamic slate of dramas, including the eagerly anticipated BBC crime series Dope Girls from Bad Wolf, and Dear England from Left Bank Pictures. As Sony embarks on this new chapter, it seeks to navigate the ever-changing TV landscape with creativity, resilience, and a spirit of collaboration.
