Ventana Sur 2026 heads to Montevideo

Ventana Sur, Latin America’s leading audiovisual market, has officially set the dates for its 2026 edition. Running from November 30 to December 4, the event will take place this year in Montevideo, Uruguay. This move cements the “Río de la Plata” model—a strategic structure that alternates the host city annually between Buenos Aires and Montevideo, designed to sustain market continuity and expand connections across the region’s audiovisual industries.

The upcoming Montevideo edition builds on the massive momentum generated by Ventana Sur 2025 in Buenos Aires, which registered a record-breaking attendance of over 3,150 accredited professionals. Reflecting on last year’s success, Ralph Haiek, Executive Director of the 2025 edition, highlighted the striking influx of young professionals and the market’s structural evolution. While the core mission remains driving audiences back to movie theaters, the 2025 market successfully adapted to modern consumption habits by expanding its sections to include series, documentaries, and shorts, alongside “Ventana Sur Tech,” which showcased technology’s growing impact across the industry’s value chain.

Organized jointly by the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, Uruguay’s ACAU, and Argentina’s INCAA, the 2026 market will deploy its extensive agenda across prominent cultural venues in the Uruguayan capital, including Sodre, Teatro Solís, and Cinemateca Uruguaya, which will once again serve as a primary hub for market screenings.

The event’s international projection was already active earlier this year during the Marché du Film at Cannes, which hosted the “Ventana Sur Goes to Cannes” showcase. The initiative presented Latin American works-in-progress to global sales agents, programmers, and distributors.

Looking ahead to December, Gisella Previtali, President of ACAU and Co-director of Ventana Sur, noted that the primary challenge for the 2026 edition is to strengthen co-production ties amid a complex global landscape, while continuing to position the strategic value of Latin American cinema. Guillaume Esmiol, Executive Director of the Marché du Film, emphasized that the “Río de la Plata” format fundamentally broadens the international visibility of the region’s talent and content.

The 2026 edition will feature a comprehensive slate of industry meetings, dedicated international sales spaces, and the return of its signature programs: Primer Corte, Copia Final, Proyecta, VS Docs, VS Shortfilms, VS Guiones, VS Tech, VS Fantastic, and VS Animation.
